G.711

G.711 is the most commonly used audio codec and is a raw, uncompressed digital representation of analog sound. Standard sampling rate is 8kHz, which at 8 bits per second gives a bitrate (bandwidth used per call) of 64kbit/s. Two slightly different encoding mechanisms are used in G.711 - ulaw (or μ-law) and alaw (A-law). Typically ulaw is used in North America and Japan.
